ART 201- MEDIA, TECHNIQUES, AND INQUIRY FOR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS

Saturday Art Classes

On Saturdays, ISU art education program hold art classes in the morning for kids K-8 in the area to participate in, I was able to observe two of the classes.

6th Grade- Mosaic project

The 6th grade level class had been working on creating their own mosaic piece for a couple of weeks with the tiles being small canvases and the focus of the tiles was mainly portraits. I mainly observed the lesson and recorded the events. During this I learn just how important beginning activities are, they allow the students to get comfortable with being creative and get them more confident in their work.

The 2nd Grade Class-

For the second week, I observed the second-grade class, and they made monsters out of old boxes that they decorated. This lesson plan had a set plan about what to do each day. They created a monster, a storyline, and a setting for the monster. I really enjoyed seeing this lesson because it is a big lesson plan with multiple parts that come together and teaches students to creative writing, character building, and set/ background making. One student made a pet for their monster to add to their story.

Flipbook

Interviewed my friend about her experience of art in her childhood, and  I was inspired to draw my friend's winning art project, a weaved pouch with a somewhat complicated pattern. During the interview, we talked about how being able to enter into competitions was a challenge due to limited resources at home, like not being about to attend, or having money for entrance fees. So with art and creativity being restricted at home, the school was the only outlet and honestly helped her to continue to be creative. Her art teacher was a big influence and help her get into the competition, so I decided to include a little thank you to him and to show that he helped push her to continue with art.

Had to create a flipbook with three elements changes.

Artist Ritual

We were assigned to start a ritual for the semester and I did the Outfit of the Day ritual but in Animal Crossing. I can relate it to future lessons by having students start the day talking about their favorite article of clothing they're wearing.  Another Idea is having students work on avatar/character design.

Teach Anything Video

For the Teach Anything project, I decided to use Tiktok to try out a new video capturing system. I decide to do my video about making coffee because it's honestly a craft with it being able to be brewed in many different ways and different forms.

PROFESSIONALISM, ADVOCACY & LEADERSHIP: PAL 1

7G: understands the need for continuing study, self-evaluation, and professional growth.

Cloud 9

For my PAL 1 for this semester, I went an art exhibition, Cloud 9, at Transpace Gallery at the Center of Visual Art.  Cloud 9 is an art exhibition by Emma Oliver, a MFA student at Illinois State. She is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on yarn craft, and I've had the pleasure to have her being a grad assistant in two 3D sculptural classes with Claire Liebman.  For this exhibition her work focus on the things she missed when in quarantine during the beginning of the pandemic. She missed having birthday parties, so her work was themed around party supplies, like balloons, cake and treats, and a piñata. At the exhibition I got to see an illusion knit piece, a piece of knit/ yarn work that has a word or design incorporated in it that a very similar color to the surrounding color that is only visible when looking at a certain angle.  I already think yarn craft works are impressive for the time it takes to learn the discipline and to make a singular piece, so it was so cool seeing a over 12 foot illusion knit that says Satisfaction.

paint saturated segments without blending the lines together-Cr.1.1.6a

Unit Overview-

Students will discuss how color is used to express emotions. The students will develop a monochromatic painting scale chart to use as references for their portraits. They will sketch out their portrait and map out and number out areas using the painting chart. Students will paint their portraits using the painting chart to determine what to paint the mapped area.  In this unit students will learn about value, creating their own color palette, improving color mixing skills, and how to properly plan out art projects.

The assignment addressed these National Visual Arts Standards for the Sixth grade level-

  • VA:Cr1.1.6a: Combine concepts collaboratively to generate innovative ideas for creating art.
VA:Cr1.2.6a: Formulate an artistic investigation of personally relevant content for creating art.
VA:Cr2.1.6a: Demonstrate openness in trying new ideas, materials, methods, and approaches in making works of art and design.

This is my second time creating a unit lesson plan and it was much easier the second time around. With the observation hours, I believe I was able to create launch and closure sequences that will be more efficient in creating the environment I want for my classroom and have more variety. I enjoy this lesson plan more since it's for middle school students I feel that I need to plan more engagement in the project and avoid having multiple days of doing the same work every time. One of my favorite things about making lesson plans is that I learn more about the subject and it can help expose me to future possible lesson plans. With this lesson plan I can follow it up with a unit on papercut crafts and relation it back to skills learn in this unit
